What Stick?
Posted by: Loren Coleman on December 11th, 2006
John Green, Rick Noll, and Chris Murphy discussed the recent revelations about the Patterson-Gimlin footage over the weekend.
Rick Noll, returning from a trip to British Columbia, sent this along today, December 11th:
I was with John Green this weekend and he showed me an email from M.K. Davis that contained yet another gif from the images I produced for John. In these M.K. is claiming to have discovered the creature carrying a stick. Looking at the images I started to laugh. The stick like figure is nothing but the outside darkend edge of the left hand… the palm of which attached occults the background as it swings back and forth during the walk. I believe this had been pointed out to M.K. over a year ago as well by Chris Murphy.
John Green forwarded this message on Saturday, December 9th:
Rick Noll was here yesterday and when I showed him MK’s stabilized sequence in which the supposed stick appears he immediately noted that there was a large white patch moving back and forth blocking out a dark object in the background, and that the “stick” was just the edge of this white patch, which has no clear shape but is probably the light-colored palm of the hand. Today I showed this to Chris Murphy, who said he had come to the same conclusion about that sequence a year ago and had told MK about it.
Both John Green and Rick Noll gave permission for their comments to be shared here.
About Loren Coleman
Loren Coleman is one of the world’s leading cryptozoologists, some say “the” leading living cryptozoologist. Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct).
Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015.
Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.
Yep.
I guess I don’t “get” the reason for this “stick-no stick” routine. Patty was interrupted at creekside, where she might have been digging for a snack – SO WHAT?
Crows have been photographed poking around with twigs. Does that make crows human?
Thinking that you see something or even having a theory hardly constitutes “proof.” Mr. Davis, please return when you have something other than a hunch to discuss.
Oh well, Davis and friends have spawned a mess for themselves. I cannot see how it can be anything but messy before it is over.
Timing is absolutely everything and making sure you speak the same jargon, language is too broad a word here, as those you are trying to reach is important
No stick!
One wishes to grit one’s teeth, avoid the tendency to hee-haw with laughter of which we accuse mainstream science when it comes to the sasquatch, and ask the obvious question(s):
People have been looking at this film for 40 years now. And we’re just now finding a stick? And making species and culture determination based on nothing else but this alleged stick?
Still not hee-hawing with laughter. But I can hear some mainstream scientists guffawing themselves silly.
And I’m not sure I can blame them.
Can someone post a still showing what Davis thinks is a stick? I’d like to see it for myself.
>sigh
What I don’t understand is the significance of a bigfoot carrying a stick. I’ve seen dogs trotting down the road with hubcaps in their mouths. I’ve seen horses snatch baseball caps off men and run away with them. The fact that Patty may have had a stick in her hand, while mildly interesting, does not signify intelligence or the lack of it.
Haven’t we all played “fetch” with a dog? Did the dog picking and returning the stick signify that it was intelligent on a par with a homo group animal?
Has “stick-no stick” replaced “kill-no kill?”
I don’t see any stick either.
The director of the new film “The Nativity Story” says that, at one point, a sheep appeared in the final print, running with a water bottle in its mouth. OK, there’s no relationship to sasquatch, but I couldn’t resist throwing it in.
MK has stated his theory of what the creature is. He has said that it is not a human in a suit and that it is human like, but that does not mean it is completely human like. He used the term Digger Indian without knowing that it was a racist term.
MK made some mistakes, who hasn’t. But you know what he is out doing what he can to prove the truth of the PG film, He spends time in the field and in the books learning about his subject and all he has offered is his theory nothing wrong with that. After all ,that is all that we bigfooters have about what the creature is are theories.
MK should correct and apologize for the incorrect usage of the term Digger Indian. He need not apologize for his theory of the PG film.
We in the Bigfoot community need to be less reactive and more open to other views. We do not need to be burning others at the stake as I feel has happened in this case.
I for one will wait to see what MK has to offer and then decide from that.
Too many puns abound that we can stick on this story.
Stick to the topic!
I’d still like to see what Mr. Davis reports as being a stick. I’d also like to know what he feels supports his conclusions.
Perhaps the stick is not a tool for digging or communication, but rather, a tool to hype an upcoming bigfoot documentary. It appears that it has served it’s purpose, rather well.
hey everyone nice article but it kinda upsets & annoys me as well. when we see mk davis complete new findings of the p/g film footage it more surprising & controversial etc but lets all be very patient. who knows maybe the creature in the film is carrying a stick or a piece of wood of some kind thats what we all here in name of science & research will find out in time. thanks bill. the controversy continues to heat up. I’m beginning to sound like a movie director in sense of the term.
Let’s hope the media doesn’t pick up on this debate, or pretty soon Sprint or somebody is gonna come out with an add showing Patty carrying their latest cell phone…
The creature in the film isn’t carrying a stick.
I also look forward to what else Mr. Davis may have to say on this issue. Could it really be that the crux of his theory regarding “Patty’s” humanity is the stick he alleges is visible in the film? As many others have pointed out in earlier comments, plenty of non-humans, including even birds, have been observed and even filmed using sticks (which they even sometimes modify for the specific job) as tools to assist in obtaining food. This type of behavior among non-humans is so widely known and documented that it seems unlikely to me that a researcher such as Mr. Davis would overlook it. Would he?
Groan.
