Discovery Channel Filming Pilot For Skunk Ape Investigator
Posted by: Guy Edwards on June 14th, 2011
From an article at the NaplesNews.com we have news that Discovery Networks has begun filming a pilot starring veteran skunk Ape investigator David Shealy.
The production company, Authentic Entertainment, has confirmed they are filming in Florida , but producers aren’t commenting on the making of the show.
Reality TV goes in search of the skunk ape
David Shealy’s been trekking through the Everglades for 35 years looking for the skunk ape.
This week, he’ll have company.
A film crew from California-based Authentic Entertainment, the production company behind reality TV shows Ace of Cakes (Food Network) and Flipping Out (Bravo) is in Ochopee to begin filming a pilot reality show intended for Discovery Channel in the fall.
Shealy, curator of the Skunk Ape Research Headquarters, has appeared on other shows about the legendary skunk ape, a yeti-like creature adapted to the wilds of South Florida, including “Unsolved Mysteries” and “The Daily Show.”
He calls the Discovery Channel pilot the biggest project he’s worked on.

Best of Luck to you David. I would make sure you have some say of the editing and how you apear in the show. Do not want Discovery Channel to make you look foolish like Animal PLanet has done to the the BFRO.
I’m sorry if I offend anyone here with this post.
Well it seems they’ve found their pot of gold. This chap will have no issue with hoaxing everything he does. Matt is a saint compared to him. LOL Honestly wasn’t he trumpeting the Bigfoot massacre stuff too?
This will end… poorly.
OBoyOBoy – A real live Production Company filming a Skunk Ape Show for the Discovery Channel!? I’M ALL VERKLEMPT!! And the Researcher has been chasing the beast for HOW long? 35 YEARS??!! OH WOW!! We are gonna get some results NOW, by golly!! I mean, what could possibly go wrong??
As for the Swamp Ape show, after the hoopla surrounding Finding Bigfoot, I must admit my expectations for any crypto show is rather low at the moment. But I’ll give it a chance before making up my mind. If nothing else, this Shealy fellow looks to be a colorful character.
I agree with redrose999. Shealy has been living off of one video made decades ago. He uses it to draw people to his campground and gift shop.
Go to his website and look at “Quotes from Dave” in the left column. I wonder if that is where Animal Planet got their misinformation?
In one of the many shows I have seen on “Mystery” animals. I do remember one segment from some show that did a voice analysis or lie detector test on David Shealy, and he failed that test.
It was on the question if he hoaxed the photographs he took.
It’s a sad state we are in when all these production companies are willing to do shows about cryptids, and all they can find to host are guys that are not men of science.
This will be TMZ meets Swamp Ape…lots of nothing.
Hey, Discovery Channel – I think you should go with an all Mythbusters format.
And History Channel should bring back MonsterQuest. That was all the crypto-type show we needed.
God speed and God bless, David Shealy.
And please see if you can add some paleontological work into the show: Florida has some excellent fossils creatures (Rusconi’s ground sloth (20 feet tall, 3 tons), Glyptodons, Mastodons, American lions, Sabertooth cats, etc). Perhaps with some extra research and fossil hunting, a skunk ape fossil might be found. a long shot, but it would be neat to find.
We’re more likely to see a bigfoot captured next year than we are to see a quality bigfoot reality show.
I think there is an ape species living in the everglades. As a matter of fact I am sure there is more than one. My belief is that the Skunk ape sightings are people seeing large orangutans and chimps. I could be wrong but to me the known species of ape theory is the most likely explanation. Who knows maybe Mr. Shealy and this new program will prove me wrong….. but I doubt it.
Well….let’s give it a chance and see if they can do the show right.
Looks like the “Billy the Exterminator” of Cryptozoology. Can’t wait to see the show. I love Billy the Exterminator by the way.
Wish I had hope in it, but I really don’t trust Shealy after the old Skunk Ape film hoax way back when. But maybe he’s on the up and up this time eh?
