“It is true, it does exist, I saw it with my own eyes,” says a Kelowna boater of a surprise experience with Ogopogo.

Two women enjoying the sun and some fun time on the water had the scare of their life when they say Ogopogo swam near their boat.

“It was a huge snake, I saw it, I saw the head. It was two feet thick and it was like 50-feet long. I could not believe it,” says Suzie St-Cyr Cowley.

The “Ogopogo” was spotted about 1,000 feet off shore in front of Quails Gate Winery on the westside. She says it was heading south in the lake.

“I could not believe it,” says St-Cyr Cowley. “I was afraid because we were so close and I wanted to move my boat away. I was screaming “Oh my god, that’s Ogopogo! It was so big.”

St-Cyr Cowley has been boating on Okanagan Lake since 2008, and says she has never seen anything like this before – she thought it was just a legend.

“I thought it was just a story,” says St-Cyr Cowley. “But, it is true, it does exist, I saw it with my own eyes.”

Her friend, Marie Letourneau, had just arrived in town from Quebec for her first vacation in Kelowna and had never heard of Ogopogo. Letourneau was the first to see the creature and didn’t know what she was seeing.

“She was just yelling “Suzie, Suzie, there’s a big thing”, and I turned around and couldn’t believe it.”

She says because they were so in shock, and quite afraid it would go under the boat, they forgot to grab a photo or take video.

“I yelled at her ‘Did you take a picture?’ but we both were so surprised,” says St-Cyr Cowley. “We could not believe our eyes. I turned around and saw the back and saw the head and it just went down. We are so sad we didn’t take a picture.”

The women claim Ogie was very long and snake-like and had five curves along its back.

“It does exist, I saw it with my own eyes. I see it and now I believe it,” says an adamant St-Cyr Cowley. “I am sure he is around.”

Cool. Five curves along its back–does that mean humps, or how it was moving or ridges or something else?

Snake like–does that imply that they saw no appendages? How it was swimming would go a long way to disproving or leaving the door open on the eel theory.

I hope they get together with an artist, a forensic artist, if possible, and get a sketch made. It would be the next best thing to the pics and video they did not get.

When did this happen ? Recently ?

    Lots of extra details here:

    Ogopogo comes back to life

Sounds like a 50′ version of a Zeugladon Whale (aka Basilosaurus). She describes it “blowing” 4-times like a whale either before or after diving deep. In her case it dove downward under the boat. Many years ago some guys in a boat saw it breech out of the water to catch a bird. It too looked like a Basilosaurus. A women at a shoreline house watch something like this wash ashore to capture some sort of prey and she described it as snakelike or even Crocodilian. So it sounds like Okanagan may be home to some living fossils. The lake is deep enough and has more than enough fish and birds to support a family of Basilosaurus. Pliesosaurs would look very different. Reported behavior is all wrong for them. Looks like they did not die off in Late Eocene period. There are some extant creatures from Late Eocene today: Hystricognatha.

We can now add Basilosaurus to that extant list. Maybe even Lake Champlain Vermont/NY USA may also have a family of Basilosaurus. But too many head and neck photos and eyewitnesses suggest Pliesosaur or Elasmosaur like Loch Ness and Loch Morar in Scotland UK. Or it may be both?

  6. cryptokellie responds:

There is no single entity as a Hystricognatha itself. The Hystricognathi are an infra-order of rodents of which the Caviomorpha are native to the New World and the Phiomorpha from the Old World.
Sorry, having sculpted extinct animals for over 35 years has left me with a wealth of relatively unusable knowledge.
    Here is a poem;
Whatever Champ is – be it truth or lore,
    It certainly isn’t a plesiosaur.
