Terrible Sasquatch Is Reported Again

HARRISON MILLS, B.C. (AP) — Indian children cling to their mothers’ apron strings today for the terrible sasquatch — a giant hairy and horrid — is on the prowl again.

For hundreds of years the sasquatch has been a fearsome "bogey-man" to the northwest Indians. It may be male or female, but it always is hairy and malicious.

None had been reported for 30 years, but horror swept the lodges of the primitive Chehalis tribe today, as word was whispered that the hairy wild one has returned.

HAIRY TRIBE OF WILD MEN IN VANCOUVER

Vancouver, B.C. — Reports that survivors of the tribe of wild men known as "Sasquatch," a race of ferocious hairy giants, who dwelt in caves in British Columbia years ago, still are roaming the rocky wilds near Vancouver, have been revived here.

The tribe was believed to have become extinct 30 years ago, but during the last year it frequently has been reported that survivors have been seen prowling near scattered settlements around Vancouver. The wild men are described as "hairy giants, nine feet tall, with a ferocious appearance and demeanor."

Seen by Woman

Mrs. James Caufield, living on a farm near Harrison, B.C., is the latest to report seeing one of the giants. Mrs. Caufield relates that she was washing clothes in a river when she heard a buzzing sound similar to that made by a humming bird.

"I turned my head," she said, "but instead of a bird there stood the most terrible thing I ever saw in my life. I thought I’d die for the thing that made the funny noise was a big man covered with hair from head to foot. He was looking at me and I couldn’t help looking at him. I guessed he was a Sasquatch so I covered my eyes with my hand, for the Indians say that if a Sasquatch catches your eye you are in his power. They hypnotize you. I felt faint and as I backed away to get to the house I tripped and fell. As he came nearer I screamed and fainted."

Screams Brought Husband Mrs. Caufield’s screams brought her husband running out of the house just in time to see the giant run off into the bush.

On another occasion two canoeists reported that the giant saw them paddling down a river and started hurling rocks at them.

Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct). Ah, for the good ol’ days, way back before we were born, remember?

  2. CryptoInformant responds:

I really don’t like that that period villianized ole’Squatch.

  3. MMTHPOOLGHOSTCAMPR responds:

First time I’ve heard of Sasquatch humming. How can a person possibly hear the humm and not sense the smell? I wasn’t there so I cant say, but I can contribute my comment.

  4. Doug responds:

Like the natives of Tibet, It is often hard to seperate myth and reality for the situation of that day. It does not seem to be the “gentle giant” that we know of, nor does it match the view of Native Americans/Canadians have of the creature that I have read or seen on video. Perhaps a way of keeping children close to home and keeping them from getting lost?

  5. preacherman responds:

I see nothing inconsistant with comtemporary sighting reports in these old reports. People are still shaken by these beings. The thing that strikes me over & over from reports from Native American’s is their “humanizing” of these beings referencing them as “wild-men”.And if they are more human that animal then they are capable of some very nasty triats. HA! “Harry & the Hendersons” is not the proto-type of these things….they are either a “wild-man” or a “wild animal”. What part of “wild” don’t we understand.

  6. Chymo responds:

preacherman is quite right. Nothing in this report really demonises the creature; it does not print a fictionalised account of attack, for instance, which one would expect if the writers were simply going for sensationalism.

Bigfoot does have a scary appearance. His face, like that of a gorilla, looks to scowl.

If the report is based on fact (and there’s no reason to suspect such an early report of being fiction) then I would lay money that the woman was experiencing menses at the time of the encounter.

    Cheers!

  7. Loren Coleman responds:

There’s definitely a relationship between these events and the first expedition in these parts…in 1934

    see here

  8. Mnynames responds:

If you read the account, the Sasquatch really doesn’t make any aggressive moves, and after all, look what he does when the woman faints- He runs away!
