Yeren Steals Beer
Posted by: Loren Coleman on April 3rd, 2008
Cryptomundo correspondent Adam Campbell sends along this sighting of a Yeren:
I saw a Yeren between Guilin and Kunming in China, in October 1995.
I was on a train travelling at night at about 20 mph when the Yeren put it’s hand through the window and grabbed a bottle of beer off the table next to the window. We heard the bottle smash about 10 seconds later. Four of us saw it of which one [of the eyewitnesses] was Chinese; he kept shouting “Yeren! Yeren!”
The Yeren had very long thin fingers covered in gingery auburn hair. We assume that it was either on the roof of the train or sitting in a tree next to the track.
Yeren art used on “wanted poster” in China.
Harry Trumbore’s drawing (directly above) of the Chinese yeren in The Field Guide to Bigfoot and Other Mystery Primates (2006) shows the creature as much more anthropoid than in most contemporary renderings. See page 131.
Adam Campbell’s account recalls the “classic images” of the Yeti hand entering the Sherpa tent in popular art:
And in popular movies, such as:
There is one graphic frightening scene in the 1957 film The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas where all that is seen is a giant hand coming into the tent (which is, unfortunately, not in this trailer). I recall seeing it in some clip of the movie on the Internet, however.
About Loren Coleman
Loren Coleman is one of the world’s leading cryptozoologists, some say “the” leading living cryptozoologist. Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct).
Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015.
Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.
Well at 20 miles per hour the critter would have to be fast if in a tree. On top of the car ok could be.. but why after all these years does the writer just remember this incident ..perhaps it was some other form of primate that is known and in all the excitement the Chinese guy miss identified the creature as a yeren . Just a thought!
Simple three term syllogism:
1. Higher primates like beer.
2. Yeren likes beer.
3. Yeren = HIGHER PRIMATE.
I do say this: that is so NOT your typical “monster” sighting. And primates can be pretty rambunctious (and SMART) critters.
Round up those other eyewitnesses, eh?
Cheers!
this is a very interesting new article of a yeren-chinese wildman steals beer. lol by goly it those mountains get realy hot & humid in certain areas the yeren stole the beer to cool down so to speak. thanks bill green 🙂
What a perplexing story. I’m not sure how it could on the roof unless it jumped out of a tree, which you’d presume there’d be indications of impact. But maybe it could of ran along side the train although I have no education in the field of the velocity of primates.
I believe the Yeren should have taken more of the beers on the table. If it had, perhaps the subject reporting the story may not have had a story to report. In other words, I believe the subject reporting may have had one beer too many! LOL
Why is it that some of these most bizarre stories are reported a decade after the event and some form of alcohol is involved?
I believe the credibility of the subject comes into question when alcohol is involved. That is my two cents.
I agree with PhotoExpert. Not only that but, at 20mph you would most likely not be able to grab a “beer” off a table of a passing train. There could also be something mixed up in the translation if it was originaly in Chinese.
Too bad a Chinese beer company hasn’t incorporated this story into an ad campaign: “Our beer’s so good that a Yeren braved both detection and a moving train for a cool, refreshing taste!”
Did it grab a white wine spritzer for Mrs Yeren?
Reminds me of the most frightening moment in “The Legend of Boggy Creek”, when the swamp ape’s hairy arm smashed through a window.
A highly significant question remains unanswered about this sighting. Was the beer a Pilsen or a Lager? 🙂
this is real funny I have now collected 4 stories of beer drinking bigfoot, I interviewd a witness in the 80s that said a bigfoot drank his beer as he hid under his sleeping blanket ,I love it lol
Since the bottle was smashed I have to conclude it was a Coors Light.
To all the sceptics: I have been telling people about this sighting for years, and if you’ve ever seen anything that can’t be explained by convention then you will understand my reticence in telling “The World”. I don’t think that the beast thought ” Ohh I’m gagging for a pint” or anything like that, I think it was out to grab whatever was on the table, In reply to Greywolf: Yes the beast was lightening fast, we only caught a glimpse of it’s arm but the most puzzling thing was the fact that we heard the bottle smash about 10 seconds later. Alligator: it was a chinese german recipe pilsner. Sausage1: you assume that this was Mr Yeren how do we know if it was a he or a she? Photoexpert: Only one beer on the table being shared by three humans. And in response to why it took so long for me to make this sighting official, I had always half thought that it could have been a Golden Monkey and just the other week I signed up on youtube and typed in “Golden Monkey” looked nothing like it, one of the related videos descibed the “Yeren” and as it goes those videos looked nothing like the beast we saw either. Upon further investigation I came across this site so sent off my account of which I am very proud to have my sighting logged for the world to see. I am also in regular contact with one of the other witnesses, the other two “an old chinese man” never to be found I’m sure but the other is a Dane called Thom must be in his lte 30’s by now. squatch-toba: I am a native of The British Isles and my account was written in english as for the 20mph issue I bet I could grab a beer off a moving target like this, take for instance those Mongol horsemen who can pick an egg up off the ground at full gallop, and if you were a Yeren and you knew that a train came down the same tracks all you would have to do would be to wait for one to come, climb up a strategically located tree and wait, or consult the train timetable (if you could read chinese!) Anyway thanks to everybody for the comments Adam Campbell
Still baffled by this sighting….
