Bigfoot Mascots and Lady Yetis?

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on March 9th, 2006

Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma is looking for a new school mascot. According to the Tahlequah Daily Press, a student project to come up with a new school mascot has landed on the NSU Bigfoots.

Just last week I mentioned here on Cryptomundo the article from the same newspaper regarding the reports of Bigfoot sightings being reported to 911.

The sports teams are known as the Redmen and the Lady Reds currently. The existing mascot is known as "Rowdy"

Rowdy looks like a reject from H. R. Pufnstuf.

There’s even talk of a related mascot for the NSU women’s sports teams, the Lady Yetis.

NSU graduate “Big” Will Boatman – who sometimes serves as the Press’ unofficial etiquette and protocol consultant on matters as far fetched as the appropriateness of flip-flops and proper jail behavior – has an opinion or two on the mascot issue.

But then, he would.

He was present during last week’s mural repainting, and took a liking to the proposed mascot change immediately. He’s even volunteered to be “Bigfoot” at NSU’s sporting events.

“We’re called the NSU Redmen, but the mascot’s not even a Native American. It’s a Muppet that scares little children,” said Boatman, who’s evidently of the opinion that Bigfoot would not have the same effect on youngsters. “At a game, we could have a sighting, with Bigfoot running across the field. Even if people don’t like sports, they’d show up just for the sighting.”

Meanwhile, in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges women’s basketball tournament, set to begin Thursday in Kennewick, Washington State, let’s all root for the last and eighth seed, the Spokane Sasquatch!

IMHO their idea is okay except when the species is discovered it will probably be given another nickname. Their mascot will then be out in the cold.

However, sports being competative by nature and agressive is somewhat contrary to what the species normally does when seen by people. They usually walk or run off.

If their teams are historically losers then maybe they choose the right mascot. Otherwise another choice of mascot is in order.

Ol bub went to NSU before entering the Air Force in 1967….located in Tahlequah, Oklahoma….the capital of the Cherokee Nation…the Welling Bridge sighting area is a favorite site for collegiate beach blanket activity….

The Barron Fork drainage basin is prime Sasquatch habitat…if I was a bigfoot in Oklahoma…I would live there….during the summer my extended family really does….”WOC”…has had numerous sightings over the decades….

Sighting tip…numero dos….watch the approaches to highway river bridges… very carefully…especially at dawn and dusk….

    seeing is believing…
