Flashback: Johor Hominid – July 4th, 2006 + A New Sighting

Posted by: Loren Coleman on July 4th, 2007

Do you remember what we all were talking about on this date a year ago, on July 4th, 2006?

Johor Hominid Man or Beast

Teasers about groundbreaking photographs of a “Johor Hominid” were being promoted with comments about having patience.

One website researcher commented to me on this day in 2006 that asking to see the Johor Bigfoot photographs is “like asking for Angelina Jolie’s unpublished baby photos,” and that I now have to “be patient like the rest.”

Yes, I said: Patience is a virtue. Patience and passion are two important components of cryptozoology research, as I have often mentioned, as per Bernard Heuvelmans.

Johor Hominid Man or Beast

But someone had taken photographs from a French documentary, and sold the hoax to Malaysian contacts. But on July 4th, 2006, it was all about waiting, waiting, and waiting.

Yes, patience is a virtue, as is trust in fellow cryptozoologists, hominologists, and Cryptomundo readers.

Vincent Chow

In the end, our patience was not rewarded properly.

Loren Coleman About Loren Coleman
Loren Coleman is one of the world’s leading cryptozoologists, some say “the” leading living cryptozoologist. Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct). Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015. Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.

  1. seanang responds:

Happy 4th of July to fellow Americans and greetings to other Bigfoot enthusiasts.

Patience is still the virtue of the day simply because the possibility of Bigfoot existence in Johor is still high. It may be just a matter of time before someone is lucky enough to take the first genuine photo.

Many were angry because of the hoax photos, and you can’t imagine how disappointed I am with the whole situation. In fact, at one point, I am quite convinced the Bigfoot saga was only “memetics” blown out of proportion. Based on eyewitness accounts there were even more bizarre stories, and just as the case of the hoax photos, some could be lies. But I am treating this as a “hermeneutic process”; things will be clearer if we could ignore the noises and focus on the big picture.

At 20:10pm yesterday [July 3, 2007], a man by the name of Ah Chong called me and told me his friend has seen 2 [Johor] Bigfoot in his durian plantation. Vincent Chow will conduct a check of the site tomorrow [July 5, 2007]. This is an interesting lead for the month of July. It could be another prank, but witnessing and knowing how the story of Johor bigfoot unfolds is perhaps a reward by itself.

  2. Lorenzo Rossi responds:

In my opinion after his poor figure about the pictures Vincent Chow is only a pathetic impostor or a perfect idiot…

  3. a_welch90 responds:

I agree with Mr. Ang, that the possibility of an actual Johor Bigfoot is certainly there. It will take more looking, and less dwelling on the hoaxed pictures. There’s something out there, but it needs to be looked for.

  4. Paul V responds:

    Loren,

Perhaps you would be generous enough to post the forward you wrote for the book here on Cryptomundo?

  5. Ceroill responds:

    Happy 4th, all!

  6. ddh1969 responds:

A year already? Doesn’t seem like much has happened since…there’s always the antics of Tom Biscardi and the current attempt at a Johor redux but I think a lot of the starch was taken out by last years escapades.

I think we need a new fairy sighting in Europe or something to shake things up…whoa…I’ll remain politically correct and won’t expand any further on that statement…

    Happy 4th Everyone…and what the hey….have a nice 5th too!

  7. sausage1 responds:

Happy 4th to all my fellow crypto enthusiasts across the pond.

    John

  8. stormwalkernz1 responds:

Firstly happy fourth of July to Loren and all Cryptomundo readers.

I guess in situations like this and I suppose any cryptozoological research its kind of what I call the ” dung beetle syndrome”.

Essentially you have this massive pile of B.S. You cart some off, knowing quite well what it is, and seeing it for what it is. You then cart some more, and more, and more. Some of what you thought wasn’t part of the pile turns out to be, other things hint of the mystery lying beneath. You eventually reached the bottom of the pile and find the truth is there all along, but was just buried under the pile that you’ve removed to reveal it.

It can be a lot of hard and frustrating work, but perseverance pays off, as does patience.

Everybody have a healthy and safe fourth of July.

  9. mrbf2007 responds:

Hi, all. Happy 4th. Yes, I remember quite well the controversy surrounding the Johor Hominid a year ago, and all the questions we asked right here. The recent “Destination Truth” segment proves that interest in this particular mystery has not dwindled or been lost, which is good. I think this mystery, if legitimate, should be explored and investigated fully, even if there is a lot of tomfoolery going on. Good job, Loren.

  10. Loren Coleman responds:

I did not write a foreword to the Chinese edition of the Johor Bigfoot book.

Sean Ang and Vincent Chow never wrote a book.

Here is Peter Loh’s cartoon (comic, editorial or otherwise), which reflected what I would have had to write about the photographs that were said to exist of the “Johor Hominid”:

  11. bill green responds:

  12. twblack responds:

Well like I said before with out a body these 2 will never have my trust again. Could the Big Guy exist there yes.

Sorry. Comments have been closed.
