Strange Nebraska Hominoid Seen

Posted by: Loren Coleman on April 18th, 2007

A Nebraska City despatch of Nov. 30th, says John Hoff, wood chopper, last Saturday night [November 26] stumbled over the form of a frightful and hideous-looking creature. He described it as undoubtedly of human form in face and body, but so frightfully deformed as to leave only a faint resemblance. The body, as far as he could observe, was entirely naked and black and rough. The head [had] the eyes almost protruding from their sockets, and fangs stood out from a horribly shaped mouth. In locomotion it used its feet, and what were undoubtedly its arms from the elbows to where the hands should have been, as forefeet. The creature escaped, and is supposed to have been drowned in an attempt to cross the river.Fort Covington [New York] Sun, December 8, 1887

Loren Coleman About Loren Coleman
Loren Coleman is one of the world’s leading cryptozoologists, some say “the” leading living cryptozoologist. Certainly, he is acknowledged as the current living American researcher and writer who has most popularized cryptozoology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursuit of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969. An honorary member of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained in the 1970s, Coleman has been bestowed with similar honorary memberships of the North Idaho College Cryptozoology Club in 1983, and in subsequent years, that of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, CryptoSafari International, and other international organizations. He was also a Life Member and Benefactor of the International Society of Cryptozoology (now-defunct). Loren Coleman’s daily blog, as a member of the Cryptomundo Team, served as an ongoing avenue of communication for the ever-growing body of cryptozoo news from 2005 through 2013. He returned as an infrequent contributor beginning Halloween week of 2015. Coleman is the founder in 2003, and current director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.

Wait, was it saying that it moved like a gorilla, or that its feet were on its arm? Sorry, I’m an artist with a vivid imagination, but that description is so vague that I’m seeing it both ways. So, either he saw a gorilla (probably escaped from the zoo or a circus) or who knows.

  2. DWA responds:

I think Nebraska is a potential hotbed of sighting reports. Here’s another exciting lead. Keep us updated!

    Sorry, couldn’t resist. 😀

  3. Ceroill responds:

shumway, I think he’s saying that it used its hands as if they were feet. The description given is a bit poetic rather than clinically descriptive. I surmise that what he was describing probably was ape-type knuckle walking. The rest of the description sounds like tall tale telling to me, though.

  4. Bob Michaels responds:

Early form of the Big Red Linebacker corp.
    Go Huskies.

  5. Fred Facker responds:

    Grandpa?

  6. Mnynames responds:

Sounded a bit, well, Werewolf-like to me, at least by way of description. The Beast of Bray Road’s grandpa, perhaps?
