Bigfoot and Bioluminescence

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on January 23rd, 2014

A question was asked of Jeff Meldrum regarding a statement made on the most recent episode of Finding Bigfoot: Super Yooper Sasquatch.

Q: Dr. Meldrum did you hear about the statement Matt Moneymaker made on finding Bigfoot. He said in a matter of fact that bigfeet (his word) have Bio luminescence as he called it and that they use this Bio luminescence to signal to each other and say hi and see if its another Bigfoot they are walking up on.

A: By coincidence I was watching that episode while visiting in-laws (I don’t have cable and rarely see FB). Matt has been know to make similar authoritative statements as if these were well documented facts. That is his interpretation of his own, and presumably others’ observation. Really no biology to support it. It would be like shining a flashlight in your eyes point blank at night. Wouldn’t be a very efficient way to signal and of no value to assist with vision at night.

  1. DWA responds:

Although one can never rule anything out, I’d tend to go with Jeff on this one.

Animals that can both see at night – as sasquatch can apparently do – and have other mechanisms to communicate wouldn’t need this; and what supports it?

  2. Goodfoot responds:

There have been reports of Bigfoot projecting bioluminescent beams from their eyes. I’m not sure what to make of them.

  3. Insanity responds:

Eyeshine is fairly common among nocturnal animals, but it is not the same as bioluminscence at all. Most primates lack the anatomical feature in the eye to have eyeshine, but it is present in many of the prosimians.

  4. semillama responds:

Again: it’s “Yooper” not “Yuper” – Nitpicking, I know, but us Yoopers can be like that…

  5. Insanity responds:

Got around to watching this episode, and it seems the basis for knowing that the eyes were producing light was when those involved in the sighting covered or turned off their head lamps and the eyes still shone. I was curious as when the expedition was, and learned it was during the end of July of 2013. I check the moon phases for Marquette that month and there was a full moon on July 22/23, 2013 and the moon was still about half come July 31, 2013. Was the moon eliminated as a source of light to cause eye shine?
