What Does Sasquatch Tooth Size Mean?

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on May 24th, 2014

From Cliff Barackman:

Witnesses that note the teeth of a sasquatch nearly always describe them as having large teeth. I have stumbled across an article that notes the trend of developing smaller teeth as brain size grows only in the genus homo among primates. Does this mean anything at all in regards to sasquatch intelligence? For those who believe saquatches have intelligence on par with humans, are they the exception to the rule, or does this likely mean they are not of our genus? Does this confirm what Dr. Krantz and others theorized about bigfoots having the intelligence of the other apes?

I don’t know. I just think it’s all interesting and worth some thought. ~ Cliff Barackman

‘Homo’ is the only primate whose tooth size decreases as its brain size increases

Andalusian researchers, led by the University of Granada, have discovered a curious characteristic of the members of the human lineage, classed as the genus Homo: they are the only primates where, throughout their 2.5-million year history, the size of their teeth has decreased in tandem with the increase in their brain size.

The key to this phenomenon, which scientists call “evolutionary paradox,” could be in how Homo’s diet has evolved. Digestion starts first in the mouth and, so, teeth are essential in breaking food down into smaller pieces. Therefore, the normal scenario would be that, if the brain grows in size, and, hence, the body’s metabolic needs, so should teeth.

However, in the case of Homo, this has not been the case, according to scientists in an article recently published in the journal BioMed Research International. The main author of the study, researcher Juan Manuel Jimenez Arenas, from the University of Granada’s Department of Pre-History and Archaeology, points out that, “This means that significant changes must have occurred in order to maintain this trend.”

I don’t believe that there is a direct correlation between brain size and teeth size. We humans developed the ability to use tools and processes such as using fire to cook food. With the ability to cook our need for masticating food decreased so our teeth and digestive abilities decreased accordingly.

Brain size does not equate intelligence. Teeth size does not equate intelligence, or lack thereof.

Sasquatch, as far as we know, does not use fire so would need to maintain large teeth and muscles to survive.

I don’t think the supposed intelligence needs to be conjectured at being on par or above our own. Personally I’ve thought that if they exist, they’re likely to possess a brain size above that of a gorilla, but less than than a Neanderthal, perhaps close to that of Homo erectus.

Might it be possible that it’s more of a proportional sort of thing… akin to a ratio of tooth size to cranial volume… with such enormous creatures, of course they have “large teeth”… yet in that there is little data pertaining to cranial volume for ’em it’s hard to arrive at any conclusions as to whether or not their dentition either excludes them from our genus or indicates degree of cognitive development.

While an interesting premise and certainly meriting research when a subject is obtained or so closely observed, until then we can’t know how it falls into the diminishing tooth size paradigm (perhaps it’s an intermediate) which is made more difficult as it seems the cause of this trend in our own species is yet to be fully understood itself.
