Opening Day Recap
Posted by: Craig Woolheater on April 8th, 2006
The day started early with breakfast here at the Radisson. We left for the Institute at 9:20 AM to see the exhibit for the first time. Kathy Moskowitz-Strain, her husband Robert Strain, and Kathy’s 2 kids followed Marcy and myself to the museum. We got there at 9:30 AM and were promptly greeted by Alison, the UTSA public affairs specialist. She had lined up several media interviews. Making our way through the front entrance, we were greeted by Alton Higgins and his wife Anita.
We then made our way to the exhibit, first going through the Big Thicket environment. It was really dark and foreboding, just like the real thing. I first talked to a person from WOAI AM radio. Then there was a succession of 4 television news interviews.
I was really impressed seeing the exhibit. It has been a work in progress since February of 2005 when I first spoke to Willie Mendez at the Institute about holding an event there.
After the interviews, it was off to the airport to pick up Peter Byrne. We actually got there early, which is quite unlike me. We made our way to the Radisson, a corporate sponsor of the event, and made plans to grab a bite to eat after Peter checked in.
The hotel restaurant had just closed, so we made our way to Mi Tierra, an excellent Mexican restaurant in the Market Square. Marcy and I were then treated to an hour or so of listening to Peter tell of the Slick Expeditions to Nepal in search of the Yeti, as well as the Pacific Northwest Expeditions looking for Bigfoot. He told us about his well-funded Bigfoot Research Project from 1992 to 1997 where he never received a single good "hot" report. Everything he got was old and not worth following up on.
He even got a call from a high school kid who threatened to burn down Peter’s facility. This kid also made threats against the president in the same phone call. Needless to say, he didn’t show up at Peter’s.
After returning from lunch, we rested up a bit. Several other members of the TBRC had gotten into town, so we decided to get together for dinner. We met up at the Riverwalk and had a great dinner at Paseano’s before retiring for the night…
Stay tuned…I will be blogging from the event tomorrow…actually today now.
