The witness sat stunned as a huge, hair-covered, bipedal figure walked from the woods on his left directly toward his location. He watched the creature cover 20-25 yards very quickly and smoothly. The animal stopped just behind several small trees on the edge of the logging road. As the witness sat amazed, the animal pushed two trees apart and stepped into the gap. No farther than 10 yards away, the animal’s hands remained on the trees as it leered at the witness and huffed/grunted twice.

Largest of today’s living tapir species, and the only one that is native to the Old World, the Malayan tapir Tapirus indicus is further distinguished by its striking ‘saddle’ of white, encompassing much of its torso and haunches. In total contrast, its four New World relatives are all uniformly dark. Naturally, therefore, zoologists were nonplussed when one of the adult Malayan tapirs sent to Rotterdam Zoo in spring 1924 from Sumatra proved to be entirely black, with no saddle.

“I love to hear from people who have stories to tell of things they have experienced on Loch Ness. These are tales that have not reached the normal public channels and may well have lain dormant forever unless blogs like this picked up on them…”

When I shined the floodlight (I had this huge floodlight that you could see forever with it – hundreds of feet), but these were only about twenty feet from us. There were three that were crawling towards us, so I didn’t see the five all at once. I saw the three and when I put the light on them, that’s what the shock was. Even four seconds can feel like four hours – you’re just mesmerized. And they got up. They went sideways and they stayed all together. And all I could think of – the leg, the thigh going down to the leg – the thigh reminded me of a kangaroo, and the foot, what was odd about it, it had a very long arch and a heel like a human. And then it walked on – they didn’t really look like toes as much as they looked like canine paws. With very long nails sticking out of it. And the reason I saw the nails is when they lifted their foot up, the dew was in the grass and you could see it shining.

Q: How widespread is the belief in cryptids such as Bigfoot or the Yeti?
Daniel Loxton: Much more widespread than the fringe reputation of the topic suggests. For example, when asked “Do you think Bigfoot (also known as Sasquatch) is real?” in a 2012 Angus-Reid poll, 7 percent of American respondents affirmed the belief that Bigfoot “Definitely is real,” and 22% said Bigfoot “Probably is real.” That’s a more-or-less typical response to polls about cryptid beliefs. And that adds up to an awful lot of people.
