Marathon Offers $75,000 Reward for Selfie with Loch Ness Monster

Organizers find creative way to boost publicity for the Loch Ness Marathon.

Organizers of the Loch Ness Marathon have found a fun way to drum up publicity for this year’s race. They are offering a £50,000 (roughly $74,500) reward for any participant in the September 27 race who gets a selfie with the Loch Ness Monster.

Given the number of confirmed sightings of the Loch Ness Monster (a.k.a. “Nessie”) throughout history, participants are probably better off buying a lottery ticket. But the legend of the Loch Ness Monster, a creature that supposedly inhabits Loch Ness, a freshwater lake in the Scottish Highlands, has been drawing visitors to the region for years.

“We realized there was a potential for our runners to help prove once and for all whether there really is a pre-historic monster living in the loch,” Race Director Malcolm Sutherland said via a press release. “With so many selfies being taken on race day, surely if she is out there, someone will be able to get one with her in the background.”

Runners who believe they have captured the Loch Ness Monster in a photograph can submit their entries to the organizers for verification, and a panel of experts will issue a ruling.

Organizers are also asking those who have run the race in the past to get involved by posting their selfies that show something strange in the water to social media, using the hashtag #nessieselfie.

The first recorded sighting of the Loch Ness Monster occurred in 565 AD. Reports of sightings increased in the 1930s, when a road was built alongside the lake. There was speculation that the Loch Ness Monster had died in 2014, but according to the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register, she was spotted last month.
