A series of pictures provided by Spanish Civil Protection on Aug. 16 shows the creature found by residents in the Spanish coastal village of Villaricos. The carcass, measuring four to five meters in length, was in an advanced state of decomposition.

Largest of today’s living tapir species, and the only one that is native to the Old World, the Malayan tapir Tapirus indicus is further distinguished by its striking ‘saddle’ of white, encompassing much of its torso and haunches. In total contrast, its four New World relatives are all uniformly dark. Naturally, therefore, zoologists were nonplussed when one of the adult Malayan tapirs sent to Rotterdam Zoo in spring 1924 from Sumatra proved to be entirely black, with no saddle.

(Today) will mark the 51st anniversary of the day that two people claimed to see Manitoba’s lake monster while having a picnic at Toutes Aides.
A day later, on Aug. 12, 1962, the only known photo of the creature was shot by two fishermen from their boat.
