Abominable Science! Authors Interviewed

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on August 10th, 2013

Q: How widespread is the belief in cryptids such as Bigfoot or the Yeti?

Daniel Loxton: Much more widespread than the fringe reputation of the topic suggests. For example, when asked “Do you think Bigfoot (also known as Sasquatch) is real?” in a 2012 Angus-Reid poll, 7 percent of American respondents affirmed the belief that Bigfoot “Definitely is real,” and 22% said Bigfoot “Probably is real.” That’s a more-or-less typical response to polls about cryptid beliefs. And that adds up to an awful lot of people.

Visit of the Sea Serpent

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on June 17th, 2013

…about five o’clock as the Steamer William Seabrook,Captain Blakenship was passing Broad River, about thirty miles North of Tybee Light, bound for this city, those on board the vessel saw at a distance of several hindered yards ahead what they at first took to be a floating log. As the boat neared it, however, they discovered it to be a living something, lying apparently still, partly submerged in the water; and as they came still closer, it assumed the appearance so often described by those who profess to have seen the Sea Serpent.

100 Years Ago: An Australian Sea Monster

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on May 28th, 2013

“The sea serpent has at last turned up in Australian waters, and was seen, or at least some curious denizen of the deep was seen, disporting himself by scores of people aboard the inter-State liner Dimboola during the voyage of that vessel between Adelaide and Fremantle.”

“The monster was seen by so many people at such close quarters that it is impossible to dismiss the story of its appearance as a mere sailor’s yarn.”

“Captain Miller says the serpent was at least 50ft long, was of the colour of a brown seal, and had a head between the size of a whale and a porpoise, and its tail was of the exaggerated fish variety. It alternately reared its head and ducked it under the waves.
