The Stuff of Nightmares

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on January 25th, 2014

From Bigfooter Will Jevning:

Imagine coming face to face with this creature. New research is being done that takes an entirely different look at Neanderthals, and turns everything we have been told about them upside down. While I do not think that the Sasquatch is what are left of the Neanderthal species, there are many similarities to them that are put forward in this theory. Nearly all of the reported relic hominids around the world inhabit the northern latitudes of the planet, and are cold climate adapted. The video link here is well worth watching and considering when thinking about the manlike creatures being seen at the edge of civilization.

    Really interesting.

Of course, we’re not sure if Bigfoots are neanderthals or another species or an evolution. However, a lot of good speculation.

I did like how we, as humans, tend to be egocentric–deciding that other similar species would look like us despite size, differences and so on. We tend to project our own traits onto other similar things.

  2. Simon Hesselager Johansen via Facebook responds:

    bigfoot!

  3. DWA responds:

Well if sasquatch is connected to this idea in any way, either this idea is wrong with regard to sasquatch or Homo sapiens showed somebody long ago who the real super-predator was, which would explain their tendency not to mess with even lone children they see.

  4. jayman responds:

I guess we have a deep need to believe in monsters. There’s more in common with Tolkien’s Orcs here than with reality. Vertical pupils like cats? A gorilla nose? Give me a break.

  5. Allen Garmon via Facebook responds:

This guy is on the fringe.

  6. DWA responds:

    Having watched the video:

    1. Nothing I’d discount. As valid as any other speculation on something we will never see.

    2. Take a look at the book All Yesterdays featuring infrequent Cryptomundo featuree Darren Naish. It says a lot about the mistakes we can make speculating on skimpy remains.

    3. Bigfoot = Neanderthal, though? To me, a stretch. I don’t think you’re getting the dimensions of what people are seeing on that size skeleton.

(While we’re on anthropomorphizing: what’s with the hostile nasty looks on all those apex predators? Predators aren’t angry when they hunt. Are you angry at the steak you buy at Safeway?)

  7. PoeticsOfBigfoot responds:

Some days I can stomach silly stuff like this, and other days I shake my head in frustration with our species’ ability to apply reason without logic. Today is the latter.

  8. springheeledjack responds:

And yeah. In the almost two thousand sightings I’ve read there has been almost no aggressive behavior against humans. I’ve read a few old reports of trappers being abducted but even those, no harm came to them. Aside from the tabloid accounts of “I had bigfoot’s baby” I’ve never read any of that either.

I have no doubt other species of primates probably warred over territory and food, but I still don’t think neanderthal is going to be what the big guy turns out to be…even if this idea turns out to be more realistic–unless there was some sort of shift in the neanderthal’s relationship with humans. Bigfoot doesn’t appear to be aggressive toward humans for the most part.

There are some Native American stories of making pacts with hairy men, but then again, if neanderthals were around, perhaps Bigfoot is another primate offshoot that lived alongside them and us–just gets more complicated the more I think about it.

Again, the bottom line is that this is just another theory and until we learn more it’s just that.

  9. alan borky responds:

The art work’s magnificent but a huge lie designed t’psychologic’ly clinch the deal because some o’ the hardest most vicious most murd’rous people I’ve ever known looked like they were havin’ tea with the vicar even as they were near kickin’ their victims t’death or slicin ’em t’ribbons.

Ditto supercannibalistic neaderthals if they existed in all likelihood would’ve been too busy slaught’rin’ an’ munchin’ t’be bothered monst’rin’ themselves up for Hollywood.

  10. Goodfoot responds:

DWA: I thoroughly agree. And something in the guy’s demeanor seemed wrong. I’m dubious of this guy’s version of Neanderthals, also. His version of them doesn’t ring true, to me.

And I can’t see any connection between a five-foot Neanderthal and a 7-8 foot giant, either. I mean, how does the first transfer to the second?

And I’m naturally skeptical of reports of 9 and 10-foot Bigfoots as well. They would seem to be exaggerations, due to circumstances of the encounter. A creature of that size doesn’t seem designed for the deep, dense forests, but would be more suited to open country, rather than dense forest country. How does something of that size get around in thickly-forested areas?

  11. Fhqwhgads responds:

People on this site become very excited about alleged differences in the proportions of Patty’s limbs from those of Homo sapiens. Well, we have some pretty complete skeletons of Neanderthals, so their limb proportions are well established; see this, for example. We also have Neanderthal feet, which can be compared with the footprints that Grover Krantz thinks were not faked because they show specific anatomical differences to allow the feet to support a much larger mass. Whether he’s right or wrong about them being genuine, he is certainly smart enough to compare Patty and those footprint casts with Neanderthal fossils. If you have time, you can make the comparisons yourself; I trust Krantz enough to feel sure that if the match existed, he would have pointed it out.

Real scientists don’t rely on their religious beliefs to establish their credibility. Danny Vendramini does just that (Them+Us): “As an atheist and Darwinian scholar, Vendramini’s work is anchored in evidence based research….”

  12. Tyler Stone via Facebook responds:

This is old news and this hypothesis has been debunked. At this point it’s probably better just left to rot.

  13. Simon Hesselager Johansen via Facebook responds:

also, that neanderthal looks like someone REALLY rustled his jimmies

  14. Simon Hesselager Johansen via Facebook responds:

on a serious note, the main reason I’m skeptical is that every single other breakthrough about Neanderthals suggests the complete opposite, id est that they were MORE like homo sapiens than hitherto thought. also, every human who isn’t of pure African descent is supposed to be part neanderthal and I can’t really square such a fact with the ‘thals looking like THAT

  15. Surveyor responds:

I have no idea how I missed this, but oh well. Yep, this is several years old and several years debunked. As usual, I’m with DWA, especially on #3.

Fhqwhgads, you are correct, we do have some pretty complete skeletons of Neanderthals. They are around 5’9″ and an estimated 170 lbs on average compared to your 7’6″+ Sasquatch at around 450+ lbs. Just slightly different. Also, you might note that Neanderthals, like us, had a rigid foot, unlike the flexible foot with the mid-tarsal joint credited to the Sasquatch by Krantz & Meldrum, et al.

We also have the complete genome of 4 Neanderthals. We know that they tended to be fair skinned, and they had a variant of the MC1R gene (red hair, etc.) that we don’t have. We don’t know how much hair they had, just that 4 of them (likely many more) had that different gene.

    Maybe BF are Denisovans …
