Butler County, Ohio has been the recent scene of some disturbing livestock mutilations. Two miniature horses named Blaze and Buck were found hacked to death last week on a stretch of pasture near what is known as Springfield Road situated near the Indiana state line. They had been known to be missing since May 23.

Since 2004, bizarre, zombie-like canines have been appearing around the state of Texas. Several of their hairless carcasses have been recovered since that time and there have even been allegations that these creatures drink the blood of small farm animals, (in a fashion very similar to the famous Puerto Rican Chupacabras), though that aspect has not been substantiated.

The wheel well around the car’s front left tire was twisted and had several punctures that could only have been made by teeth.
The word “chupacabra” — Latin America’s legendary goat sucker — was mentioned by more than one. Lupine creatures found in Romania were invoked. Others posited a coyote-wolf hybrid.

I remember 1995. It did not seem an especially mystical year, or anything like one that could give birth to a new strain of folklore that could last for decades or more. But then, maybe I was too busy with the fourth grade to notice.
