On 8 August 2015, the city of Lepel in Belarus’s Vitebsk Province hosted an international festival of mythology entitled ‘On a Visit to Lepel Tsmok’ . Among the varied array of subjects featured in this festival’s talks and presentations was Lepel’s very own legendary monster, one that was once virtually unknown to the outside world. Thanks to a wonderful statue here, however, all that is now changing, rapidly.

“In August of 1978 a small town in eastern Ohio was thrust into the spotlight when a local family sighted a “monster” in the woods behind their home. Over subsequent evenings they were repeatedly visited by the creature culminating in a late-night encounter that ended in local police being called in. The story blasted onto the front pages of newspapers across the state and into the consciousness of a nation.”

Monsters No Longer Have Cooties!

Posted by: Chalupacabra on November 7th, 2014

They’re in, they’re hip, and suddenly (after thousands of years) they rule pop culture. Up until recently, telling someone you were into monsters and cryptozoology was not a shortcut to popularity. But things are changing. Monsters are taking over TV, starring in more movies, as well as appearing on beer labels and hipster T-shirts. And since monsters are now cool, that means the people who look for them are cool, too. Right?

2nd Annual Boggy Creek Festival

Posted by: Lyle Blackburn on October 22nd, 2014

The 2nd Annual Boggy Creek Festival is coming up this weekend Oct 24-25, 2014 in Fouke, Arkansas. Fouke is, of course, home of the infamous Legend of Boggy Creek. The purpose of the event is to bring together the local community and to share information about the sasquatch-like creature that has been sighted in the area for over a century. The festival features local arts and crafts, music, entertainment, food vendors, and presentations by local bigfoot researchers.

Camping at the Miller County Fairgrounds will be open starting Friday Oct 24, while the main event will happen Sat Oct 25 along Fouke’s main strip just off Highway 71 and Main Street. (Just come to Fouke and you can’t miss it!)

Wherever this resurgence of interest in the Bigfoot legend spawned from, it seems to be working in favor of found-footage horror films. Last year, it was Bobcat Goldthwait’s “Willow Creek”, a suspenseful, surprisingly charming slow-burn that followed a young couple into the titular Pacific Northwest wilderness in hopes of capturing the beast on video.

While of the same genus, Eduardo Sánchez’s “Exists” is a different animal. Revisiting the style that set a precedent for ultra-low budget horror movies at the dawn of new millennium with his minimalist blood-curdler “The Blair Witch Project”, the director aims to leave substantially less to the imagination this time around. And it could be his best flick yet.
