Reviewing Dragons in Zoology, Cryptozoology, and Culture

Posted by: Karl Shuker on July 19th, 2015

After extensive research, I finally wrote my long-planned second dragons book – entitled Dragons in Zoology, Cryptozoology, and Culture – and saw it published in 2013 by Coachwhip Publications of Greenville, Ohio. It constitutes one of the most comprehensive dragon-themed factual books ever published, is sumptuously illustrated throughout in full colour, and very recently I was delighted to see not one but two positive, encouraging reviews of it.

The Last of the Irish Elks?

Posted by: Karl Shuker on July 15th, 2015

One of the most spectacular members of the Eurasian Pleistocene megafauna was the Irish elk Megaloceros giganteus. Formally described in 1799, it is also aptly known as the giant deer, as its largest known representatives were only marginally under 7 ft tall at the shoulder and bore massive antlers spanning up to 12 ft, but did this magnificent species linger on into historic times?

Australia’s Unknown Ape-Men

Posted by: Nick Redfern on July 6th, 2015

There is no doubt that Australia’s most famous cryptid ape is the Yowie. It resembles Bigfoot in both size and appearance to an incredibly close degree. It stands around seven to ten feet tall and is covered in a thick coat of hair. Far less famous, though no less fascinating than the Yowie, is Australia’s Wakki, also known as the Njmbin, the Junjudee, the Waladherahra, as well as by many other names, depending on the relevant Aborigine tribe that tells of its existence.

Dog With A Human Face

Posted by: Nick Redfern on July 5th, 2015

If, like me, you’re a fan of the writings of Linda Godfrey – and particularly her werewolf-themed book, The Michigan Dogman – then what I’m about to share with you now is likely to be of deep interest. It’s an old newspaper story – dating back more than a century – that is eerily reminiscent of some of Linda’s findings. And, it demonstrates that when we dig into the past, we can sometimes find fascinating tales that have a direct bearing on the present.

Exploring American Monsters: Georgia

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on July 3rd, 2015

Georgia, named after King George II of England, is one of the original thirteen colonies. It was the birthplace of civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King, Jr., singer Ray Charles, “Gone with the Wind” author Margaret Mitchell, and wrestler Hulk Hogan. Yes, THE Hulk Hogan. Of the 37 million acres of land in Georgia, 24.8 million acres of that is forestland. The Peach State is the fourth largest state east of the Mississippi River, and is home to mountains, rivers, and monsters.

Bigfoot sightings have been reported in every state except Hawaii. Interest in this creature, which many believe to be as mythical as a leprechaun, is as strong today as ever, with the wildly popular show Finding Bigfoot persisting on the Animal Planet network and references to bigfoot appearing throughout popular culture. What is it about bigfoot that causes some people to devote a chunk of their lives to finding one?
