Many folks have asked what I thought about Bobcat Goldthwait’s new Bigfoot movie, WILLOW CREEK. I was lucky enough to attend a screening with Bobcat himself and more recently view a screener of the released film. Rue Morgue magazine has kindly allowed me to reprint my review (which appeared in their July issue) for Cryptomundo.

I don’t often read fiction, but occasionally a book comes across my path that beckons me to put aside scholarly texts and enjoy a good story. Case in point, The Secret of Blackjack Woods, the debut novel by Ashlen Brown. I recently met the Texas-based author at a cryptozoology event where I picked up a copy. Having no prior knowledge of her book, I was initially drawn in by its mysterious title and cover – which seems to hint at a Bigfoot story – and after a brief conversation with Brown I learned that indeed the impetus for her novel had come from an incident in which her mother and sister sighted a mysterious creature near their family home in Texas. This led to speculation that it could have been a Bigfoot which later inspired Brown to write her heart-felt and downright exciting novel.

Happy Holidays everyone! Cryptozoo News / Loren Coleman has posted his list of Top Ten Cryptozoology Books of the Year. I’m honored to have landed the #1 spot with my new book Lizard Man. I must thank Anomalist Books for their commitment to publish excellent cryptozoology titles, including Karl Shuker’s Mirabilis which was chosen as #4. Congratulations to my other colleagues and fellow Cryptomundo contributors that also made the list. 2013 was a year of great books, all deserving of praise. Here’s a few of the highlights…

If you follow bigfoot research, you’ve no doubt heard the controversial name of Justin Smeja. Smeja is, of course, the bear hunter who claims to have shot and killed a juvenile sasquatch in the Sierra mountains in 2010. Since coming forward, his story has been widely spread on the internet (through both interviews and a small documentary), and lately featured in several television shows including Bigfoot: The New Evidence. The DNA evidence has been analyzed, but still the question remains: did Smeja actually kill a bigfoot?
These type of stories tend to polarize the bigfoot community as researchers struggle to sort out the truth. In an effort to do just that, bigfoot researcher and independent filmmaker, Ro Sahebi, in association with The Sierras Evidence Initiative, has created a new feature documentary titled Dead Bigfoot: A True Story. In the doc, Sahebi interviews the witnesses, initiates a polygraph test, and takes a look at the various shreds of evidence that have thus far been presented.

Here’s the Fouke Monster segment from Season 1 of the Destination America show “Monsters & Mysteries in America.” These two reenactments were based on cases that I personally investigated. One was detailed in my book and the other occurred after my book was released.

I was doing research on monster sightings that have occurred in various swamps locations around the southeast U.S. In the process I actually visited swamps in several different states, including Scape Ore Swamp near Bishopville, South Carolina. As I interviewed people in the area, including law officials and witnesses, I realized there was much more to the story of the Bishopville Lizard Man than had ever been made public. It seemed like a great story, so I ended up developing it into a book.
