Alaska is big. At 663,300 square miles, it’s about the size of Germany, Poland, and France.
That’s a lot of open area for bear, moose, and killer whales, but it’s also a haven for monsters.

Dragons, Bigfoot, chupacabras, unicorns, mermaids. These legendary creatures have captured imaginations, inspired art and culture, and spurred wild speculation. In the new exhibition Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns, and Mermaids, opening at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science on Friday, March 20, the world’s most enduring fantastical beings come to life through dazzling statues and models—such as a unicorn and 17-foot-long dragon—and are examined more critically through real fossils and cultural objects that have created generations of lore.

They’re in, they’re hip, and suddenly (after thousands of years) they rule pop culture. Up until recently, telling someone you were into monsters and cryptozoology was not a shortcut to popularity. But things are changing. Monsters are taking over TV, starring in more movies, as well as appearing on beer labels and hipster T-shirts. And since monsters are now cool, that means the people who look for them are cool, too. Right?
