Eugenie Scott is an anthropologist but is probably most well known for her work fighting against Creationism in the American public education system as director of the National Center for Science Education (NCSE). Perhaps less well-known is the fact that she’s long been interested in Bigfoot. In this episode of MonsterTalk we discuss Bigfoot, science promotion, and the usefulness of thinking about monsters in honing critical thinking skills.

Ron Morehead, adventurer, author and Bigfoot expert, discussed how he witnessed, recorded, and had vocal interactions with a family of giants, commonly referred to as Bigfoot or Sasquatch. He shared Bigfoot recordings, known as the ‘Sierra Sounds,’ that have changed the world of Bigfoot research.
The recordings were captured in the 1970s at a remote hunting camp, Morehead explained, noting how hunters there had first thought the sounds were being made by bears. They found a large footprint outside of the shelter and began taping the sounds they were hearing, he added. “We weren’t looking for Bigfoot, none of us were… these things were probably observing the camp and the people in it for some time prior to making themselves be known,” Morehead said. He described the vocalizations as aggressive, sometimes horrendous sounding.

Either way, before you pack up your gear and head for the woods, check out a few tips on stalking Bigfoot.

The story begins at the end of 1968 in New Jersey, when zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans and biologist Ivan Sanderson first hear from a correspondent about the frozen corpse of an extremely hairy man-like creature being exhibited in the Midwest. Upon arrival in Minnesota, the two scientists come face to face with a “hominid” not of our species embedded in a block of ice. An inquiry into the origin of the specimen triggers a bizarre adventure involving the FBI, the Smithsonian, the Mafia, the Vietnam War, drug smuggling, Hollywood, and a secretive millionaire, giving much of the account the flavor of a riveting detective story. What happened is told in meticulous detail by Heuvelmans, who draws a startling conclusion as to the Iceman’s nature based on a comparison of its anatomy with that of modern humans and fossil ancestors.

Whether the large, hairy hominid known as Bigfoot truly roams the wilderness of Humboldt County hasn’t deterred scores of enthusiasts and a television series from joining a nearly 60-year quest to find signs and footprints of the ever-elusive creature.
But one local scientist and professor says the search for Bigfoot opens a larger discussion about what the science world deems worthy of research and what happens to those fields that fall into what he calls “the crackpot realm.”

…Stepp attended a conference on all things Sasquatch to celebrate the launch of the Bigfoot section of the China Flat Museum in Willow Creek. There he introduced himself to Jeffrey Meldrum, professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University and an oft-interviewed Bigfoot researcher. Meldrum’s area of focus is the evolution of bipedalism — the anatomical distinctions and development of our ancestors that led to our walking on two legs, including the dynamics of their footfalls, footprints and skeletons.
