For centuries, tales have been told of a massive, unknown, aquatic creature living in the waters of Lake Champlain. The “beast” is said to be anywhere from ten to thirty feet long with an abnormally long neck, flippers and a dinosaur-like appearance. Sightings of the animal known as Champ reached their peak during the 1970s but history tells of a bizarre “water horse” said to reside in the lake long before the area became inhabited by settlers. Today, Champ is celebrated in local towns and villages along the lake and has even become a mascot for the local minor league baseball team and will soon be the focus of a new documentary series titled On the Trail of… Champ.

In 1952 five children were playing football in a small town called Flatwoods, WV when a strange object appeared above them. Streaking across the sky, they watched it crest a nearby hill, slow and then descend just over the top of the ridge. What followed after their sighting has become one of the most infamous local legends ever recorded. That night, seven area residents encountered a hovering, mechanical monstrosity that was described by area newspapers as “glowing” “Frankenstein-like” and breathing fire.

In 1966 four people driving on a deserted stretch of road in rural West Virginia encountered a bizarre, winged entity that came to be known as “the Mothman”. The event was the catalyst for a thirteen month-long string of unusual activity centered around the town of Point Pleasant, WV. For over a year, citizens of Point Pleasant were witnesses to UFOs, strange government and military-related activity, and the Mothman itself. Today a new trailer for a film that traces the Mothman case (titled The Mothman of Point Pleasant) has been released.

Now in its final days, the crowdfunding campaign to fund the production of the third Small Town Monsters film, Boggy Creek Monster, has gathered well over 150% of its initial goal. While the outpouring of support is somewhat unprecedented for a documentary revolving around the Bigfoot subject, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. With the involvement of the man who authored the definitive book about Boggy Creek, Beast of Boggy Creek, as well as the name recognition associated with the Legend of Boggy Creek, the Kickstarter had a head start.
