The perfect habitats for Bigfoot?
Well, sure. Colorado has a long history of Bigfoot encounters, but “Exploring American Monsters” isn’t about well-known cryptids like Bigfoot, it’s about bizarre hidden monsters like the Slide Rock Bolter.

Based on actual events. Boggy Creek, Texas is renowned for its poverty, ignorance, meth usage, dogfights, and as of late, its citizens’ encounters with a 9 ½ foot tall, upright, ape-like creature. These are those stories as told by the people that experienced them in a collection that can only be described as Larry McMurtry meets Deliverance and Breaking Bad.

Police and wildlife officials in Sanilac County, Michigan, are warning residents to lock up their pets and livestock and keep their children indoors until they determine what kind of large creature or animal killed a 1,200 pound horse in broad daylight. In this part of Michigan known as “the Thumb,” locals fear the killer could be anything from a coyote to a cougar to a Sasquatch.

Does a hulking, hairy, 800-pound, nine-foot-tall, elusive primate roam the woods and forests throughout North America—and the world? What should we make of the grainy videos and photos and the thousands of eyewitness reports? Audio-recordings exist purporting to be the creatures’ eerie chatter and bone-chilling screaming. Whether called Sasquatch, Yeti, Bigfoot, or something else, bipedal primates appear in folklore, legends, and eyewitness accounts in every state of the union and many places around the world. The fascination with the man-beast is stronger than ever in today’s pop culture.

Bigfoot is, of course, the most well-known and widespread strange creature, and reported sightings of the large apelike beast aren’t unheard of in Alabama. They’re common enough that a man named Jim Smith created the Alabama Bigfoot Society, and the group’s website tracks recent sighting reports. I wanted to share this article in light of the fact that Dr. David Oren and his search for the mapinguari is featured on tonight’s episode of Animal Planet’s Finding Bigfoot entitled Amazon Squatchin’.
In August of 1999 or so, I ran across the article in Discover magazine. It chronicled an ornithologist named David Oren’s treks into the Amazon in search of the Mapinguari, what is thought to be the still living giant ground sloth. The article detailed the derision that Oren suffered from his fellow scientists.
