The film is about the mysterious sightings of an unidentified beast in Whitehall in August 1976. A number of eyewitnesses, including members of law enforcement agencies, saw a strange, huge, hairy, man-like creature in the Adirondack region, in the northeastern part of upstate New York. Now, an independent film crew from Ohio, including producer/composer Brandon Dalo, have made a film about the ominous events.

When we think of sloths, we generally picture those famously sluggish, dog-sized, tree-dwelling beasts that spend much of their time hanging upside-down from branches in modern-day Central and South America. Millions of years ago, however, there were several additional, very different morphological types – of which the most famous and dramatic were the ground sloths.

Large hairy man-beasts had been raiding human settlements in Oklahoma and Arkansas for some time, mostly stealing vegetables, but had also been stealing human children and eating them. A Choctaw search party was organized and led by Joshua LeFlore, to flush out the beasts and eliminate them. The Choctaw Indians were known as exceedingly strong, fierce warriors, but that day they experienced something which none would ever forget.

Now in its final days, the crowdfunding campaign to fund the production of the third Small Town Monsters film, Boggy Creek Monster, has gathered well over 150% of its initial goal. While the outpouring of support is somewhat unprecedented for a documentary revolving around the Bigfoot subject, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. With the involvement of the man who authored the definitive book about Boggy Creek, Beast of Boggy Creek, as well as the name recognition associated with the Legend of Boggy Creek, the Kickstarter had a head start.

The Loch Ness Monster, bigfoot and the yeti have long held a fascination for people the world over. Debates about their actual existence or what they might really be have continued for decades, if not centuries. Known also as cryptids, they have spawned a body of research known as cryptozoology. This entertaining book looks at the evidence of these mysterious monsters and others and explores what they might really be (if they exist at all), why they have been represented as they have and the development of cryptozoology and how it has collected data to discover more about these unknown creatures.

I speak to Daniel S. Green, author of Shadows in the Woods: A Chronicle of Bigfoot in Maine. Maine has a very long history of Sasquatch sightings in the state, from mountain tops to people’s property near towns. Shadows in the Woods chronicles Maine’s rich Bigfoot record in Native American traditions and beliefs, Wild Man sightings, modern Bigfoot encounters, literary appearances of hairy man-like creatures, and strange somethings in tales and stories suggestive of Bigfoot.
