Fouke’s Monster Mart Makes Big Changes

Posted by: Lyle Blackburn on June 6th, 2013

When I started researching for my book, The Beast of Boggy Creek, the first place I visited was the Monster Mart in Fouke, Arkansas. At the time, the Monster Mart was an unassuming little convenience store that only hinted at the town’s big legend. The outside of the store did have a small mural of the creature (made famous by the movie The Legend of Boggy Creek), but the inside merely offered a cheerless curio case and a few old newspaper clippings tacked to bulletin board near the front door. It was better than nothing, but all in all, a rather disappointing display of memorabilia and crude merchandise that, to me, seemed unworthy of the town’s intriguing history.

Since the release of my book, however, there have been some major changes which have elevated the historical recognition of the legend and the curb appeal of the Monster Mart itself.

Exploring American Monsters: Arkansas

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on May 6th, 2015

The state of Arkansas in the southern U.S. is known for its lush green mountains, roaring rivers, and University of Arkansas football. It’s the headquarters of the world’s number one retailer, Wal-Mart, and is the birthplace of musician Johnny Cash, and former U.S. President Bill Clinton. It’s also the home of monsters. The most famous of these is the Fouke Monster, a sasquatch-type creature immortalized in the 1972 movie “The Legend of Boggy Creek.” But this series, “Exploring American Monsters,” isn’t about well-known beasts, it’s about the lesser-known creatures the world sees from the corner of its eye, like the Ozark Howler.

Exploring American Monsters: Alabama

Posted by: Craig Woolheater on March 10th, 2015

We all love monsters. Something about an unknown creature (hairy or scaly, huge or small) living amongst us, unknown to science, is unsettling at best, terrifying a worst – and it is exhilarating. This is the first in a series of articles about monsters from each state in America, but not the well-worn monsters. I won’t cover Champ, the Jersey Devil, or Mothman. I’ll also leave Missouri’s Momo alone, as well as Arkansas’ Fouke Monster, and the chupacabra. This series is about the lesser-known critters that crawl through our nights, and stalk the periphery of the human world.

Every state has reports of these less publicized, but inherently frightening monsters, most of which have something seriously wrong with them. Like this monster from our first state, Alabama – the Alabama White Thang.
